15 OF THE MOST MEMORABLE JEWELLERY MOMENTS AT VENICE FILM FESTIVAL 2020

TILDA SWINTON VENICE FILM FESTIVAL JEWELLERY

Covid-19 has meant a dreary, six-month dearth of major red carpet moments – the kind where the stars dazzle the world in diamonds the size of gobstoppers. Fortunately, the 77th Venice Film Festival has come to the rescue, with plenty of high jewellery and big gemstones on display. Not that this year’s festival is business as usual. Red-carpet outings have been more muted than in years gone by, and focused on grown–up chic and wearability, rather than carat–weight.

The queen of understated but unique sartorial style, Tilda Swinton made a statement when she accepted the Golden Lion for Career Achievement at the festival’s opening ceremony wearing mismatched diamond earrings from Chanel’s latest high jewellery collection, Tweed de Chanel. The edgy jewel that climbed up her ear was the perfect contemporary addition to her simple monochrome Chanel couture gown. The mismatched earring trend has also been spotted on Emma Corrin in Chaumet, and Argentine model Cecilia Rodriguez in Messika.

Meanwhile, Venice veteran Cate Blanchett has used this year’s festival to pledge her commitment to greater sustainability. Alongside her reworked gowns, it is no accident that she has chosen time and again to wear Pomellato at the festival. The Italian jeweller made a promise in 2018 to use only responsibly sourced gold, and is pushing for greater transparency in sourcing coloured gemstones as well.

For others, Venice has marked a welcome return to the red-carpet necklace trend. Taylor Hill has looked resplendent in colourful bibs from Chopard, while Stacy Martin’s emerald Louis Vuitton necklace was a perfectly chic contrast to her black and white cocktail dress. Amira Casar proved you don’t even need big diamonds on the red carpet. Her dramatic Étoile Mystérieuse pendant by Elie Top was statement enough.

Here is British Vogue’s pick of the best jewellery looks so far from Venice Film Festival. The message in Venice this year is clear: whatever you wear, make a statement. But keep it simple.
